Fundraiser

Hey guys & girls!!
I think kelly's idea of hats, gloves, and scarves would be great! we could have some fun with it and send out order forms to the parents via mail. I'm gonna try to get some pictures made up of some of the ideas I had for the stuff. I'll let you asap! I was thinking for the hats have a white line go around the hat and have above it "Behrend Snow line." For the gloves, I thought maybe we could have paws on them. I'm still thinking about the scarves. If any of you know a good place to get these things made, please email me. Thanks!!

Questions

Hey everyone:

Thank you for getting registered on here. We still have about eight more at this point, but we're getting there.

I want to initiate some participation by asking you to post your own blog entries that answer a few questions. Please answer the following by our next meeting (Monday, October 8th -- 5:00 PM):

1.) Knowing what you do about Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath of the storm (after listening to the two Red Cross volunteers, seeing the slideshow, watching the TV coverage yourself), what surprised/surprises you the most about what happened?

2.) At this point, whether you're going on the trip or not, what do you want to hear more about with regard to Katrina and the aftermath?

3.) Christa just posted a quote from Edmund Burke on the blog: "Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little." Interpret this -- what does this mean to you? How do you think this relates to the service-learning floor?

Fundraising Ideas

I have some fundraising ideas for the Service Floor (and anyone else) to look over.
Ideas include: Sarris candy bars, t-shirts, sweatshirts, gloves/mittens, scarves, candles, and dining-out with Max & Erma's. Please reply and let me know what you would be most interested in doing. Or if you have any other ideas feel free to share.
Thanks-Kelly K.

Volunteers Needed!

This Saturday (Sept 29th) is the Parents Weekend Carnival. The Service Learning Floor has signed up to sell Sarris pretzels from 12-4. We need volunteers to sell pretzels at the table. The more money we raise, the less we have to pay! This is an easy opportunity to show your commitment to the group. Please send me an e-mail if you can help out. kak409@psu.edu
Thanks!
Kelly K.

September 24

As you all know Red Cross volunteer William Magee will be joining us at our meeting on September 24. I have just received word that Mike Litzinger would also like to speak to us on the same date. He is a Katrina responder as well and lived/worked in the impact zone.

Please be sure that you are present at that meeting if at all possible. It's very important that we show support to our guests who are taking time out to help us prepare for our trip!

SLAC Updates

Hey everyone:

I wanted to provide all of you with some updates from the SLAC Meeting held on Tuesday.

We mostly focused on fundraising opportunities for the trip to Gulfport. The group decided to look at four things -- a t-shirt sale, selling beta fish at the carnival during Parents and Families Weekend, selling chocolate and pretzels at the same table, and the other... is escaping my mind right now (I'm writing from my apartment, not the office). But bottom line -- we're going to be pretty busy this semester, and we'll have lots to discuss at the meeting on the 24th.

Remember that we have a representative from the Red Cross, William Magee, coming to our meeting on the 24th to discuss his trip down to the Gulf Coast region during the time immediately following Hurricane Katrina, as well as his time spent responding to the fallout from Hurricane Rita. Again -- Tuesday, September 24th, 5:00 PM, Smith Chapel Living Room

We're also going to be completing a skills inventory so that our camp knows what skills we have. If you don't have too many skills, don't worry: one of our programs this semester will be spent learning basic construction tips from some of the employees in Maintenance and Operations here at Behrend.

Thanks for visiting the blog, and make sure you return soon. As we get more people here, material will be added much more quickly.

Peace!

PDA web link

Hello everyone,
I enjoyed the meeting on Monday especially all the pictures Craig posted. Hopefully they are helping you get an idea of what it is really like. I was searching the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) website today and found something others might enjoy. http://www.pcusa.org/pda/response/usa/gulfcoast/katrina-2yearslater.htm
This link will take you to the Hurricane Katrina Relief part of the PDA website. If you watch the video it shows what the demo and drywall crews actually did. Also, you can see the back of our chrome sign in one of the clips (right below St. Andrews hockey stick I think it is). If anyone has any questions or concerns about the trip, feel free to contact me kak409@psu.edu
Thanks! Have a great day :)

Food for Thought...

"I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live."

UPDATE: Sorry -- the special is on Thursday, September 6th at 7:00 PM.

UPDATE II: Christa taped this, so if you want to watch it on your own, let her know and she'll lend you the tape!
